Royal Enfield has taken the nimble Continental GT 650 and turned it into an ideal track tool by tweaking the performance by 12%, stiffening the suspension, shedding 24 Kg and fitting a sleek race fairing. This ensures the competition-ready Continental GT-R650 is manageable for novices as well as being a potent, highly capable racer in the hands of experienced riders.
Designed in-house, the quintessential cafe racer half-fairing is made from race-pedigree fibre reinforced plastic, making it light and flexible yet rigid and gorgeous. The acrylic bubble screen provides greater aerodynamics and clear visibility while protecting the racer from buffeting at high speeds.
The bespoke designed, stainless steel exhaust system is tuned to give 12% more power than the stock setup. It reduces the overall weight and increases ground clearance and cornering ability.
Lighter and lowered race clip-ons tuck the rider down behind the fairing. Positioning the rider lower over the tank makes for better aerodynamics with a confident racer triangle.
The recently added Steering Damper ensures enhanced safety and gives each racer the confidence to change direction and tackle surface undulations with complete stability and ease.
Race-tuned front suspension from K-Tech is a fully-adjustable and re-vavled for stiffer compression and rebound dampening. Giving racers the ability to take turns at high- speeds with confidence.
A stiffer-liner rated rear suspension set from Gabriel provides race-ready handling. Giving the racers the stability they need to go into corners with ease and confidence.
Rear-sets replace the stock rider footpegs to position them better for enabling higher lean angles and provide an aerodynamic riding posture. This lets the riders get their knee down and nail the apex around every corner.
Soft Compound Race Tyres by JK Tyre for enhanced grip and braking allowing better cornering speed and feedback.

It was 2020 when I first saw the Royal Enfield Continental GT-R650. I was racing Formula 4 cars back then, and in the National Championship event organised by JK Tyres, Royal Enfield had brought a whole lot of race prepped bikes for the Royal Enfield Continental GT Cup.

As exciting as the idea of sharing a racetrack with national championship competitors sounds, in truth, it’s a fairly unspectacular event, with a foregone conclusion. No motoring journalist can hope to mix it with professional racers – both in terms of skill and willingness to risk it all in the chase for glory.

It has been four years since the last time I competed in a race. It might not sound like much, but back then, I was still in my twenties, had the strong desire to clock the fastest possible lap time every time I was at a racetrack, egging to push myself to the limit with the awareness of falling in the process, and a whole lot slimmer. And I received a reality check, as unfiltered as it could be when RE had invited a bunch of journos for the inaugural round of the second season of the Continental GT Cup at the Kari Motor Speedway.

Racing against your colleagues in the media is always fun, but at the same time it is super competitive. So naturally, I put in my best foot to prepare myself mentally and physically for this challenge that lay ahead of me. From watching onboard footage on YouTube of racers thrashing this bike around Kari Motor Speedway to taking tips from guys in the office who have ridden the bike, I did it all. “Anybody can be a racer,” is what my takeaway was from an interview I had with Adrian Sellers, Head of Royal Enfield’s Industrial Design Department and Custom Program, and it was time to put this to the test.

Review of the Royal Enfield Continental GT-R650 - It states that the standard Continental GT 650 could be turned into this mean machine without emptying your pocket and it’s the big takeaway for anyone wanting to do open sessions on track and learn the faster way forwards the proper way.

It is Sunday. Race day. The professional racers have wrapped up their final race of the season. And with that, their bikes are now free for us to use and enjoy. However, we will be running the bikes as is, which has us slightly concerned, particularly about the tyres.

Racing brings out the purest of emotions. It is true. I went through a whirlwind of emotions over the two days I pretended to be a racer, even if it was just amongst my fellow auto journo buddies. From positive encouragement to incredible elation to raging anger to determination to satisfaction, the Royal Enfield Continental GT Cup Media race had me go through them all.

Things for 13 of us journalists, however, began a day earlier. After the day’s races were wrapped up, we were given 10 minutes of practice to get acquainted with the motorcycle and the race track. This session was divided into three batches since there were only five spare GT Cup bikes between the 13 of us. The rest of the race bikes were out of bounds for us since the racers had one more championship-deciding race to go. With practice done, we were given another 10 minutes to set our fastest qualifying time.

The Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 and Interceptor 650 are two of the most accessible 650cc twin-cylinder motorcycles on sale in India today. The Continental’s sportiness has impressed us on the road, but this 2022 Continental GTR 650 race bike used in the Royal Enfield Continental GT Cup racing championship, takes the stock motorcycle’s capabilities to a whole new level. And all of that, with five simple changes.

A high adrenaline race weekend of the JK Tyre presents Royal Enfield Continental GT Cup 2022 concluded at Kari Motor Speedway, Coimbatore on September 16th, 17th and 18th 2022. Race weekends are always fun. From pre-race preparations in the pits to the excitement during the race, to the celebrations that follow, there is a lot to see, observe, learn, and experience in such events. Hailing from a mechanical background, I always find it fascinating to watch the pit mechanics tinkering with the race machine — in this case, the RE Continental GT-R650. After a successful inaugural season of the Royal Enfield Continental GT Cup, I, along with a bunch of journos, had been invited to witness the opening round of the second season at Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore. And if everything goes smoothly, we would also get a chance to ride the GT-R650 cup bike on the track.

Cafe racers hold a special place in my heart. I have an old Royal Enfield Continental GT 535 in my garage that I rode quite a lot in my formative years, I loved my time astride the Triumph Thruxton R and when I first got to ride the Continental GT 650 in California, it was nothing short of a blast as we did the ton down the Pacific Coast Highway. Even when the Conti 650 became a part of our ZigFleet, I took it for a weekend spin first to Lavasa before handing over the keys to Manaal.

Last year, Royal Enfield announced that they were going to do something that almost no one would have imagined. They decided they wanted to go racing and they were going to do it with a delicious looking race bike based on the Continental GT 650. After a hugely successful first year, Royal Enfield is back for season 2 and they’ve invited us to try out their updated Continental GT-R 650 race bike.
